Introduction \n\n1.1 In September 2024, Tata Steel UK confirmed an investment of £1.25 billion, inclusive of £500 million of support from the UK Government, to transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking in Port Talbot. \n\n1.2 This investment will bolster the UK’s steel security and will be the first major step towards the decarbonisation of the country’s steel industry, reducing direct emissions by 50 million tonnes over a decade whilst maintaining our annual output of up to three million tonnes of steel a year. From blast furnace steel to green steelmaking \n\n3.1 In response to increasing demands for green steel from Tata Steel UK’s customers and the existing assets at Port Talbot nearing the end of their operational life, an agreement was made with Government to invest £1.25 billion in state-of-the-art Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology.
